Garmin Instinct 3 update fixes Tactical feature bug

Garmin continues to push out software updates at a rapid pace, and the latest beta for its mid-range Instinct 3 smartwatch lineup has just dropped.

This update focuses on fixing bugs and making some minor enhancements, especially for the Tactical variants.

This new release, called Beta Version 14.08, is part of Garmin’s ongoing v14.xx development cycle for the Instinct 3 series, which began less than a month ago.

Like previous test builds, this update requires manual installation, showing that it’s still in the beta testing phase and not ready for a wider consumer release.

Fix targets Tactical models

The headline fix addresses a niche but important issue affecting Tactical editions of the Instinct 3 family, including AMOLED, Solar, and Crossover variants.

Prior to this update, some devices were unable to properly receive data from laser range finders—a key feature for users in military, hunting, or outdoor navigation scenarios.

With Beta 14.08, Garmin says that functionality has now been restored, bringing Tactical models back in line with expected performance.

Part of a broader update wave

The release arrives amid a wider push from Garmin to refresh its wearable software ecosystem.

Earlier this week, the company issued beta updates across several other product lines, including Version 22.21 for the Garmin Fenix 8 series and Version 17.16 for devices such as the Garmin Vivoactive 6 and Garmin Forerunner 970.

Taken together, these updates suggest Garmin is entering a new development cycle expected to run for several weeks before stabilizing into public releases.

New features and system improvements

Beyond bug fixes, Beta 14.08 introduces updated translations across supported devices and lays the groundwork for a broader feature set expected in an upcoming stable v14.xx release.

Garmin has outlined several additions planned for all Instinct 3 and Instinct E models, including:

  • A new Mobility app
  • Recovery Time glance and Morning Report card
  • Stocks glance
  • Backup and restore support
  • Fixes for interval workout crashes
  • Improvements to inReach messaging reliability

Select models, specifically Solar, AMOLED, and Crossover editions—are also gaining support for Workout Execution Score, along with enhanced training guidance that factors in recent dive activity.

Meanwhile, the Crossover variant will receive Connect IQ support for controlling its analog hands, further expanding customization options.

Stable update still weeks away

While the changes are notable, they are unlikely to reach the broader user base immediately.

Garmin typically cycles through multiple beta iterations before finalizing a stable release, and Version 14.08 is expected to be followed by additional test builds in the coming weeks.

For now, users eager to try the latest features—or in need of the Tactical fix—will need to opt into manual installation, as Garmin continues refining the Instinct 3 experience behind the scenes.
